Charities call for a UK summit to address 80 needless winter deaths a day
Charities National Energy Action (NEA) and Energy Action Scotland (EAS) have released a new report which estimates over 9,600 frail and vulnerable people across the UK are at risk of dying throughout the coming winter months due to cold homes; 80 people per day.
NEA and EAS are calling on all four nations’ governments to hold an urgent summit to agree where new resources can be found to stop tragic winter deaths. The new UK Fuel Poverty Monitor also provides the latest national fuel poverty statistics and an update on the key aspects of policy which impact on 4 million fuel poor households as well as the population at large.

EAS Reaction to New Fuel Poverty Figures by Local Authority in Scotland
With wintry weather still gripping the country, the new
fuel poverty figures for each local authority in Scotland published today (28
Feb) are significant and the charity Energy Action Scotland say they highlight
the scale of the problem which many households face to keep themselves and
their families warm at home.

Fear that Energy Price Rises will Push Up Fuel Poverty
The news today (Feb 3) that npower is increasing its electricity and gas
prices for customers next month by up to 15 per cent will without doubt
set off alarm bells for many people already struggling to afford their
fuel bills. Some other energy companies have already said they also
expect to increase prices this spring.

First Comprehensive Study of Scottish Projects Dealing with the Health Implications of Fuel Poverty
The
vital and sometimes life-saving work carried out by dozens of organisations
across Scotland that tackle health issues caused by fuel poverty has been
mapped in a new report published today, Thursday 02 February 2017.

and Energy Action Scotland.

Energy Action Scotland Reaction to new Scottish Fuel Poverty Figures Published
The fall in the level of fuel poverty in Scotland, as
announced today (6 December) is welcome news in that the figure is moving in
the right direction and means fewer people are living in cold, damp homes
compared to the previous year. But
unfortunately the change does not signify ‘job done’ as the new figure for 2015
is still higher than the first ever measurement of fuel poverty in 1996.

New report highlights how to address key failings to eradicate fuel poverty across the UK nations
Following
the recent elections in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales two charities have
published a joint report highlighting why progress to eradicate fuel poverty
across the UK has slowed despite statutory commitments and current policies.
The UK Fuel Poverty Monitor, produced annually by NEA and EAS, says huge
variations and changes to relevant national and UK wide affordable warmth
policies has inevitably hindered progress to eradicate fuel poverty and
challenges policy makers to respond to other key recommendations.

Keeping Warm and Well in Winter - Highlighting the Help Available
When the weather is cold, it’s important for
us all to get the help that is available to keep us healthy by having a warm
home.
The national fuel poverty charity Energy
Action Scotland, with support from Scottish and Southern Energy Power
Distribution, has produced an information leaflet called Keeping Warm and Well in Winter.
The leaflets have been
distributed to all GP practices across Scotland with a request for them to be
displayed in their waiting rooms.

Energy Action Scotland Reaction to Gas Price Cuts
In the wake of announcements by E.ON and SSE that they
are reducing gas prices by around 5 per cent, the national fuel poverty charity
Energy Action Scotland has called for other companies to follow their example
in making cuts but have urged them to do so before the heating season ends.

Call for End to Fuel Poverty Made in Face of Huge Increase in Excess Winter Deaths and in Support of Challenge Poverty Week
‘Set out a
detailed plan to ensure that no-one in Scotland has to live in a cold, damp,
expensive to heat home.’
This is
the call from the national charity Energy Action Scotland to the Scottish
Government during Challenge Poverty Week and on the day that a four-fold
increase in the number of excess winter deaths in Scotland is announced.
